Hot Melt Glue

Hot Melt Glue

Hot melt adhesive is any polymer based glue that can be applied in a molten state. It is composed of three elements: polymers, resin, and plasticizer. Polymers provide strength and flexibility, resin provides wetness and adhesion, and the plasticizer element allows the adhesive to be easily applied.

Types of Hot Melt Glue

EVA adhesive
EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is the most common type of hot melt adhesive. EVA-based adhesives are capable of bonding to a very wide range of substrates and are flexible enough to effectively resist cracking, even when exposed to UV rays. They are also durable, maintaining strong adhesion even under extreme temperatures.

Polyolefin adhesive
Polyolefins have a longer pot life than many other types of adhesives. They set quickly and tend to be fairly inexpensive. They can also be applied at lower temperatures than many other adhesives, which improves user safety, reduces energy consumption and lessens their environmental impact.

APAO adhesive
Amorphous poly-alpha-olefins (APAO) are a popular type of polyolefin adhesive. APAO-based hot melt adhesives are chemically inert and can adhere to non-polar substrates, shiny surfaces and a wide variety of fabrics. As such, they are widely used in the foam mattress manufacturing industry. They provide an effective moisture and gas barrier, have excellent heat and cold resistance, and are highly resistant to UV rays.

Polyamide adhesive
While polyamide hot melt adhesives require high application temperatures, this gives them excellent heat resistance once set. They are also resistant to chemicals, oil and gasoline, making them ideal for use in the automotive industry. They also have low flammability and create an effective barrier to oxygen.

Polyurethane adhesive
Polyurethane products cure when exposed to moisture. Therefore, hot melt adhesives made with polyurethane are much more effective in damp conditions than other types of adhesives and are waterproof once set, making them ideal for outdoor use. Polyurethane creates a strong, flexible, durable bond that will last for a long time and be able to withstand significant wear and tear.

Pressure sensitive adhesive
Pressure sensitive hot melt adhesives are unique because they retain their ability to form a bond at room temperature. Their exceptionally long open time makes them ideally suited for precoating, where bonding occurs independently of the application process.

Application of Hot Melt Glue

Automotive industry

Hot-melt is used to assemble both trim and automotive seating and accessories.

01

Food and beverage industry

Due to its ability to withstand temperature and moisture extremes, hot-melt adhesives and pressure-sensitive labels for applications within the food and beverage industry.

02

Woodworking and furniture

Manufacturers utilize hot-melt adhesive in paneling, cabinetry, and furniture assembly applications.

03

Bookbinding

Major book manufacturers and independent bookbinders utilize hot-melt adhesives to bind the final product.

04

Packaging

Regardless of industry, hot-melt adhesives are ideal for use to seal corrugated boxes and cartons, to seal wrapping, to stabilize pallets, and more.

FAQ

Q: What is a creasing rule?

A: The creasing rule pushes the paperboard into the groove of the make-ready, located under the paperboard, creating a permanent crease. The creasing tool's construction and performance are essential elements in obtaining a satisfactory result.

Q: How thick is creasing rule?

A: Normally plywood plates of a thickness of 18mm are used for cutting dies applied for folding- boxes, and plywood plates of a thickness of 15mm are used for converting corrugated board. However, there are some markets where these values may vary.

Q: How do you keep glue from hardening?

A: Remember, glues are activated by moisture. One of the best ways to minimise this risk is placing your glue in a zip lock food bag and then squeezing out all the air. Place the vacuum sealed bag upright in a cupboard; your glue should be as good as new next time you come to use it.

Q: Is hot melt glue permanent?

A: When cooled to a temperature below its melting point, hot melt glue results in a strong bond that is guaranteed to last. In fact, hot glue is as permanent as epoxy glue and it is suitable in applications where epoxy is not.

Q: What is the shelf life of hot melt adhesive?

A: Hot melt has a longer shelf life than most other adhesive systems, which means you will not be wasting money by throwing away unused, expired product. While other systems, such as solvent-based adhesives, max out after one year, standard hot melt can be stored for two years or more when stored properly.

Q: How do you make hot glue stronger?

A: Apply a certain pressure: after the hot glue is applied to the items to be bonded, bring the two materials together and apply a certain amount of pressure. Only by applying pressure can the molten hot glue properly penetrate into the tiny gaps of the materials, resulting in a stronger bond.

Q: How to store hot melt glue?

A: Hot melt glues are very resilient. However, some care is still required. Typically, hot melts need to be used before the one-year mark, but it does vary by individual product. They also need to be kept in moderate temperatures, moderate humidity, and out of direct sunlight.
